2022 North American International Auto Show: Everything You Missed Detroit’s history is primarily marked by the genesis of the American auto industry, and while Motor City has certainly earned its nickname as the birthplace of Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, it has also seen its share of hardship and turmoil over the years. The culmination of Detroit’s notable achievements and its turbulent past leads to the city’s resilience and hopeful vision for the future — a theme that extends to the 2022 North American International Auto Show as it returns to downtown Detroit after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

The theme of the past and the future is on full display among the notable cars featured at the show: an all-new generation Ford Mustang, a pair of vintage-inspired Jeep hybrid models, a Chrysler 300C final, and a top-performance 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe RST. Our team took a closer look at each of those all-new electric and hybrid models arriving in the not too distant future, including the Chevy Equinox EV, Dodge Hornet, Toyota Crown and more.

One of the most awaited cars at the show is the redesigned 2024 Ford Mustang. Rumors circulate that the seventh-generation Mustang might be the last gas-powered version as the automaker shifts its focus to electric, but in the meantime, muscle car pros will still be able to choose between a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder or a 5.0-liter V8. Liter. And to round out the deal, Ford also revealed the 2024 Mustang Dark Horse at the show, claiming it will be the most capable version of the powerful 500-horsepower car. The exterior has been slightly updated, but the interior has been overhauled with a large number of customizable screens and graphics. The new Remote Rev allows drivers to accelerate the engine from outside the vehicle using their keychain, and track-ready features such as a front turret strut, limited-slip differential and rear wheels and wider tires are attainable with the performance payoff.

With the Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wrangler 4xe hybrid models moving into the future, the SUV is returning to its roots with the 30th Anniversary Edition of the 2023 Grand Cherokee and 2023 Wrangler Willys 4xe. The Grand Cherokee features black exterior accents and wheels, black leather seats, additional standard tech and safety features, and 30th Anniversary badges. Meanwhile, the Wrangler Willys 4xe 2023 wears a Willys decal on the hood and “electric all-wheel drive” decal on the swing gate, plus headlights and fog lights, a nine-speaker Alpine audio system, all-weather floats, a limited-slip differential and rods Rock, black grille and 17″ black painted alloy wheels.

2023 marks the last year of the Chrysler 300, but before it leaves, the brand checks out more power and performance upgrades, as well as some unique visual cues inside and out, with the 300C in a limited range of 2,000 units. Power comes from a good 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 that makes 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. The sedan will be available with red four-piston Brembo brakes, a new three-tone badge, 20-inch forged wheels and a black chrome front grille. The interior features black leather seats with the new 300C logo and silver stitching throughout, as well as carbon fiber accents and a piano black color scheme.

Chevrolet Tahoe RST: In pursuit of performance

A new high-performance Chevrolet Tahoe 2023 model debuts with more power, lower ride height and borrowed elements from the Police Tahoe PPV. The Tahoe RST Performance Edition package gets a 6.2-liter V-8 with 433 horsepower and 467 pound-feet of torque, and will add $8,525 to the $70,000-plus 6.2-liter Tahoe RST-equipped.

The 2022 North American International Auto Show opens to the public on Saturday and runs through September 25. Hours of operation are 9 am to 9 pm Saturday to September 24 and 9 am to 7 pm September 25. Prices are $20 for adults (13 to 64), $12 for seniors (65 and older) and $10 for children (3 to 12); Children 2 years old or younger are free with a fee-paying adult family member.
