The rest of the truck gets a slight update for 23, bringing the face in line with much of the F-Series lineup and even resembling the next-generation Ranger. Suffice it to say, the Ford looks as good as ever yet still offers plenty of customization for owners to get exactly the cab and bed style they want.

More power options

The addition of two new engines is also welcome (which makes your choices for four), but I am a little surprised there is no electrification anywhere in the powertrain. A full hybrid like the F-150’s PowerBoost might not make sense for extreme duty cycles in Super Duty, but even adding some sort of electrically powered boost should help improve efficiency. This has been done by the aftermarket supplier for years now, and I’m really surprised that Ford didn’t do something like that itself.

Adding an adequately sized battery pack may allow Ford to include more useful versions of the ProPower Onboard generator system: Ford has added a 2.0-kilowatt system to the 2023 Super Duty, but at least two more powerful systems are available that power the F-150 PowerBoost hybrid. We have found these systems to be really useful in all kinds of situations,. Since the Super Duty has been used as a towing vehicle and top-end excavator by a large portion of its customers, I find this omission somewhat curious and unfortunate.

As with every new Super Duty game, there are some great new technologies. For 2023, it’s available in a few areas: The newly redesigned cabin continues its upscale ethos—in models sold to civilians, however, not those sold to fleet customers—and now features digital gauges and a larger touchscreen. There’s also a head-up display for the first time, and a new system that can integrate multiple additional cameras placed around the trailer you’re towing for a full 360-degree camera view of both the truck And the tractor.

The new Ball Recognition System, which helps you hook up a trailer by helping the backup camera identify the traction ball and then operate the pedals, is an absolute marriage-saving feature, with ease on a par with Ford’s original innovative ProTrailer Backup Assist system. A new onboard scale that measures cargo weight in bed and displays the weight on your phone, dashboard or via LEDs in the taillights is also very stylish. But that’s what we expect from Ford in the new Super Duty: great ideas that aren’t eye-catching but are actually useful, practical solutions to problems you didn’t even know you needed to solve.

What we don’t know yet about the new Super Duty is one of its most important specifications. Ford showed us the new truck without any horsepower, torque, fuel economy, towing capacity or payload numbers. The company insists that all of this is improved through 2022, as expected for a new truck, but we’ll reserve the final verdict until we see what Ford engineers have done with the new powertrains and chassis modifications. Those numbers, plus prices, will get close to the truck’s sale date in 2023 – which is also likely when we’ll be able to sit behind the wheel and pull someone home from their base.
