The heavy-duty pickup truck class is one of the fiercest in the auto industry, especially with only three options: the Ford Super Missions, the 2500/3500 Ram and the Silverado 2500/3500. Almost every announcement of updates to any of these trucks seems designed to get one in the competition with slightly more horsepower or torque, or higher maximum towing or payload capacity. While it does offer some performance improvements, the updated Chevrolet Silverado HD 2024 targets an area it has neglected: off-road.

For the first time, the Chevrolet Silverado HD 2024 will offer ZR2 trim, though Chevy handles most of the details surrounding this new model. The Ram 2500 Power Wagon is the king of the heavy-duty off-road pickup class, though Ford Tremor trim helped the Blue Oval dip its toes in the water. With the upcoming ZR2, Chevy’s toughest off-road trim, the Power Wagon may have a contender, though we’ll have to wait and see more details.

We welcome other updates to the 2024 Silverado HD, from the updated, less flashy front end to the improved interior and styling that brings the Silverado HD into line with the Silverado 1500 half-ton, Tahoe and Suburban full-size SUVs. Powertrain improvements include more horsepower and torque for the Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 engine and canceling the six-speed automatic transmission for the gas V-8; Every Silverado HD will now use an Allison 10-speed automatic.

In LT models and up, the interior of the Silverado HD will look very familiar to those who have paid attention to recent updates to the Tahoe, Suburban SUV, and Silverado 1500 half-ton. The center console area has been redesigned to improve storage and charging for wireless devices, and rear seat occupants now get air vents and controls.

Powertrain, Towing and Payload

Gone for 2024 is the six-speed automatic transmission of the Silverado HD’s gas V-8 engine. Now, regardless of engine choice, buyers get an Allison 10-speed automatic. Gas trucks have a final drive ratio of 3.73, while diesel engines have a 3.42 ratio. The new transmission should offer improved performance from the gaseous V-8, according to Chevy, as well as a higher maximum towing capacity of 26,000 pounds, up from 24,000 in the previous gas Silverado HD.

The Duramax turbo-diesel 6.6-liter V-8 gets improvements that Chevy says improve both fuel efficiency and lower torque. Horsepower and torque are improved, too: The Duramax now produces 470 horsepower (up from 445) and 975 pound-feet of torque (up from 910). The maximum towing remains constant at 36,000 lbs.

Depending on the configuration, the actual maximum load may be Drops Slightly off the previous Silverado HD, which Chevy attributed to changes to packaging and content. Max payload is found across the lineup in the gas engine, twin RWD Silverado 3500 of 7,290 pounds, down from the 7442 in the 2022 model. Because of how varied the payload limit is, be sure to refer to the door jamb label, which provides towing and payload capabilities. Minutes for that particular truck.

GM’s Clear Trailer Technology now also works with gooseneck and v-head trailers; The camera system provides a view that makes the trailer appear invisible, providing a clearer picture of what is behind and around the trailer. The Silverado 2024 HD also adds the Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert system, which takes into account the trailer when calculating blind spot warnings, and the Combined Gross Weight Alert system that alerts drivers if the combination of the truck and trailer exceeds the specified gross vehicle weight rating for the pickup truck.
