The problem was that the new Silverado wasn’t as good as the AU. A comprehensive 2022 update has changed that, however, making the Silverado a viable alternative to these competitors.

Its biggest drawback was the sub-standard interior, with a look and feel that fell short. For 2022, that’s thankfully changed, with a major upgrade in cabin materials and design. A welcoming and comfortable interior is something pickup buyers have come to expect in recent years, and Ram in particular has raised the bar with its semi-luxury interior quality. Ford also stepped up, particularly in the top trims of the F-150.
While Silverado’s interior improvements are limited to mid- and high-end trims, these are the models most favored by non-commercial buyers. We’re guessing that everyone, except for utility companies and contractors, will find the upgrade worth the extra expense.
Chevrolet didn’t mess around with a lot of other things as part of the renovation, nor was it needed. Our high country parts test truck proved capable, roomy and comfortable; It was much nicer on the inside than the last Silverado we tested.

Small details can make a big difference, and one we really like with the Silverado is a little sticker that indicates the exact towing and payload capacity of any truck a buyer chooses. With the amazing variety of powertrain, suspension, and configurations available with all full-size pickup trucks, it’s a good idea to take the guesswork out of Chevrolet to see exactly what your truck can do.

4. Great Features
The Multi-Flex Tailgate is a really useful addition that doubles as a step, mobile workspace or bed extender. The Silverado High Country is also equipped with deceptive towing features, including multiple camera views and options that allow the system to hide a trailer for an unobstructed rear view display. We also like the trick running panels that slide back to make it easier to get into the bed. But perhaps the most impressive is the Super Cruise semi-autonomous drive system, which works so well that it leaves drivers with a little work on the highway but they pay attention to it.

2. Google Growing Pains
General Motors is in the midst of ditching its trucks’ interior infotainment system in favor of built-in Google. Unfortunately, we ran into some glitches with the Google OS, including intermittent Bluetooth phone connectivity, unreliable voice controls, and occasional screen freeze. Whether or not these issues are specific to our test vehicle, we’ll be watching this system closely as we see more of it.
3. Gas mileage
As much as we love the smooth, powerful 6.2-liter V-8, it may not be the best option given current gas prices. The fuel economy of our test vehicle was put at 15/20/17 mpg city/highway/combined, and we saw 16.9 mpg overall in mostly highway driving. Keep in mind that Chevrolet recommends premium fuel for this engine. The 3.0-liter diesel is the most fuel-efficient option, with 22/26/24 mpg.
