Jeep Wrangler: Which Should You Buy, 2022 or 2023?

Jeep Wrangler: Which Should You Buy, 2022 or 2023? Which should you buy, 2022 or 2023? Modest price increases generally favor the 2023 model, which should be worth more than the otherwise comparable 2022 at trade time – unless the dealer offers a heavy discount on the older model. The exceptions are if you want to phase out EcoDiesel in November, or discontinue your Snazzberry or Sahara paint with a guide.

Jeep is offering minimal changes to its 2023 Wrangler two-door and four-door Wrangler Unlimited SUVs, but perhaps the biggest on the powertrain front with the ditching of Sahara’s 3.6-liter V-6 with manual transmission and phasing out the engine EcoDiesel. On top of that, the Rubicons are getting new wheel designs, and two new colors have been added to the palette: Earl (bluish silver) and Reign (purple).

Motors

Wranglers are offered with five engines and either a manual or automatic transmission, although not every model offers all the combinations. There is also a hybrid version of the Wrangler Unlimited called the 4xe which Jeep considers a separate model but also carries practically unchanged from 2022.

The base engine is a 285-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 that comes with a six-speed manual transmission. This is the only way to get a guide. A mild hybrid version of the V-6 comes with an auxiliary electric motor (called an eTorque) with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A cheaper way to get an automatic transmission is to opt for the 270-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with the eight-speed automatic. The 260-horsepower, turbo-diesel 3.0-liter V-6 that comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission will be dropped by the end of 2022. The Wrangler Unlimited 4xe has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors and a 17-good battery pack for 375 horsepower combined and up to 21 miles of all-electric driving. Topping the group was the wild-caught Rubicon 392, the only Wrangler to offer a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 with 470 horsepower.

Part-time all-wheel drive is standard on Sport, Sport S and Sahara models, with a full-time all-wheel drive option. The 4xe and Rubicon 392 come standard with full-time all-wheel drive.

Regardless of engine and transmission, Wranglers are rated to tow up to 2,000 pounds and Wrangler Unlimiteds up to 3,500 pounds.

Jeep Wrangler: Which Should You Buy, 2022 or 2023?

Safety and technical features

While the base sports a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it’s unobtainable with any of the common safety features, like forward collision warning and blind spot alert. To get those, you have to jump into the Sport S and then add them as options. The $1,145 safety package offers Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert along with Rear Park Assist. The $945 Advanced Safety Pack adds forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and automatic high beams. The same applies to higher trim levels except for the Rubicon 392, which comes standard with these two optional packages.

Other features available on all but the base sports include an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi hotspot and navigation, along with SiriusXM satellite radio, Guardian Connected services, Traffic Plus and Travel Link.
